I have started using a couple of private twitter accounts to chat to my wife on our iPhones.
We use Tweetie because it supports multiple accounts.

I actually use Yahoo Messenger for Skype alternative for chatting and free PC to PC calls. I used to subscribe to Skype paid service too but now I also ditched it in favor of Onesuite voip service.
I get better service from Yahoo and Onesuite than Skype (no support)
